Matthew Abaya is an award-winning filmmaker who not only writes his productions, but also specializes in handling their cutting-edge visual effects and animation. Abaya uses horror and science fiction elements to present contemporary social issues to a mass audience. Often borrowing archetypes from Asian folklore, Abaya focuses on themes relevant to immigrants and other social and ethnic minority groups. His short films have been screened at the San Francisco and Los Angeles Asian American Film Festivals as well as the Hawaiian International Film Festival. They’ve earned an Independent Vision Award from FA/Cine and UFAAFRA, a DIY Music video award at the San Francisco Asian American Film Festival, and a nomination for an aMedia AMMY for Best Short Film. Abaya currently teaches digital multimedia and filmmaking to at-risk youth in East Palo Alto. He’s working on a feature-length version of his critically acclaimed short film Bampinay, titled Vampariah.
