For those of who want more, here’s the “Relation That Suck” Study Guide. The guide provides background on Eva and Dries, walks readers through each scene and explains how the visual elements and text work together to tell the story, contains spider facts, answers some frequently asked questions, and much more.

Study Guide (PDF, 253 Kb)

An excerpt on Eva’s style: “As we are initially introduced to Eva, she wants to make a good impression so her attire and style are a bit more formal: her coiffure is neat, her nails trimmed, and her dresses refined and genteel. As the story progresses we see a more intimate vision of a dejected Eva. Her tresses begin to unravel, her nails grow out, and her dress more loose and casual. Delving deeper into her vampire-side, Eva’s hair burgeons into a mane like an animal ready for attack. Her garb also reflects her previously-suppressed aggressive, predatory nature.”

Nocturn: Bringing Stories Back to Life

me&jenLIn the 20th century stories were told by machine (a projector or television set) to a passive audience. Now genre-busting artist Marilyn Yu is putting the personal back into story-telling. Her recent book launch party, Nocturn: Celebrating Those who Live in the Shadows, created a unique experience of the story by bringing together the story-teller, a multi-media homage to the characters, and a participatory audience. The Raven Queen (aka Marilyn Yu) invited you in to have a raw liquid snack in a candle-lit, smoky coven with a slide-show in remembrance of Eva and Dries. The band Laguna Sunrise accompanied a haunting fashion show in memory of Eva. The evening finished up with the audience exploring and capturing their darker side with make-up artist Jen Holiday and photographer Alessandra Bernal.

Nocturn – Celebrating Those who Live in the Shadows

Fears, Fantasies, Fetishes, and Phobias
Art and Life Mesh to Help You Embrace the Darker Side

Award-winning, San Francisco-based fashion designer, Marilyn Yu is transforming Roe Lounge into a den for the creepy-crawly creatures of the night. Yu is known for her genre-busting creations and Nocturn, the launch party for her book, is no exception. Her shadowy aspect, The Raven Queen, will be hosting a night featuring a vampire fashion show, music from the haunting Laguna Sunrise, raw liquid snacks, and more. Guests are encouraged to come dressed as their night-crawling persona and participate in creating the spectacle. A Photo Station equipped with costumes, props, photographer (Alessandra Bernal), and make-up artist (Jen Holiday) will capture the decadent display.

“Light defines shadow and shadow illuminates light. You cannot have one without the other,” says Yu. This is the theme behind Nocturn. Yu wants people to embrace the areas of life deemed “darker” to gain a greater understanding of themselves. This message is echoed in her book “Relations that Suck: The Story of Eva and Dries,” a fable about the friendship and destiny of two timeless characters. Eva is a creative vampire who likes people. Dries is a traveling spider who disdains web-spinning. “Relations That Suck” is a piece of art in book form that bridges the worlds of fine art, fashion, and writing. It portrays the tragedies of denial and guilt through thirty-five dramatic photographs accompanied by a poetically heart-breaking narrative.

Interview on French American TV Program

Last week Marilyn was interviewed by Aline Guetta Dinoia for the program “French American TV.” They discussed Eva and Dries, vampires, art-making, photography, and many other things. Links to the interview:

French American TV is a weekly program, produced predominantly in the San Francisco Bay area and a few times in France by Aline Guetta Dinoia. It started in 1987 and has evolved into a non-defined format covering events and people. On stage, people connect with their ideas or activities. It is produced in two to five segments forming a whole – but shown separately on TV. It’s the only show that combines French and American Cultures into one program. It began as a bilingual program and now includes other cultures and languages.

Review from MyShelf.com

Relations That Suck: The Story of Eva and Dries is a short story about a friendly vampire/lounge singer named Eva, and a spider named Dries who has nothing but disdain for spending time spinning webs which can be destroyed in an instant by an unthinking human hand. The relationship between Eva and Dries is quite unusual. Eva is not happy about taking human blood, and often suffers from guilt. Dries grows into a very large spider and is able to trap small prey, such as rats, to feed Eva’s thirst.

Each page of this book narrates the tale of Eva and Dries, yet the photographs really take the spotlight upon themselves. The photography is haunting and glamorous, and I felt that photographers Angela DeCenzo and Norma Cordova did a fantastic job capturing the moods of the story.

Marilyn Yu does spin a surprisingly touching tale, although I admit to being a bit puzzled as to why two very different models portrayed Eva.

Both models Jennifer Allford and Jennifer Lazorack are beautiful, yet one has light hair and the other a darker color. Perhaps this represents Good vs. Evil? I was left a bit unsure about that. Male models Calvin Jones and Marcus Wu appear as well, and handsomely suit their roles.

While most of the photographs could indeed be used as pages from a fashion design portfolio, there are a few graphic pictures showing Eva in her glory as a vampire.

In addition to the intriguing clothing, the hair styles and makeup are flawless, with most of it done by Christal Saville, along with contributions by hair stylist Matthew Mommer and makeup artist Nikol Dedischew. The locations for the photo shoots suit the story quite well, and I do think that above all else, the photography is outstanding.

This is a book I would recommend to people who love the fashion design world and the mystery of a good, short vampire story. The spider, Dries, is quite the character too!
