‘Relations that Suck’
A Picture Book for Fashionistas
by April Elkjer

Eva has only one little black dress…that might only seem unusual because she is a vampire but still Coco Chanel would most likely approve.

This fashionably dressed vampire with a penchant for creativity, Catholic guilt and human sympathy – who meets a dark handsome arachnid – is the creation of Marilyn Yu in the form of a book called “Relations that Suck: The Story of Eva and Dries.”

“Her wardrobe is mainly evening wear as she is not out during the day…” said Yu. And she is shod in an eclectic-style from many different time periods to reflect her age and deep, jewel-like colors that support her lounge singing nightlife.

Yu is a clothing designer and artist who has a varied background with a bachelor’s degree of fine arts in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design and a master’s in city and regional planning from UC Berkeley. Before turning author she ran her own sustainable and award-winning clothing design company called Plutonium Clothing, creating outfits, wedding dresses and theatrical costumes.

With “Relations that Suck” she has created a fine weave, with fashion, fine art and publishing in a gorgeously dark picture book with beautiful theatrical clothing.

“To me the characters are kind of like mythological characters and I’m really interested in the whole idea of mythologies and belief systems and how people incorporate that in their lives.”

Both creatures suck their prey and both spin. In this case one is stuck in the past and the other lives only in the future. How they approach living and each other is part of the tragedy that is told with thirty-five dramatic photographs.

“The vampire doesn’t like being a vampire,” said Yu. “She feels very bad about killing people. She’s actually Catholic. And so she wants to be creative to convince herself that she’s not a destructive vampire when she actually is.”

As for Dries the spider’s character, Yu explained that “… historically, especially in North America the spider mythology is about the spiders being the creators, caretakers of the world and the human race. Dries had some tragedies in his childhood and no longer wants to fulfill that role so instead he goes to travel. He lives in the future and looks for the next thing.”

On the scientific-side, Yu even consulted entomologist (people who study insects) in conducting research.

The creative team included photography by DeCenzo+Cordova, jewelry by Viv&Ingrid, eye candy models, skilled hair and make-up artists and clothing design by Yu. Oakland artist Stephani Martinez’s doilies and spider webs are highlighted as the work of Eva’s penance.

Another Review Just In

A kind of picture book for grownups, “Relations That Suck: The Story of Eva and Dries” by Marilyn Yu tells the story of a vampire and her relationship with a man who is drawn to her. What makes “Relations That Suck” unique in the vampire genre is that it is composed of 30 striking photographs with an almost poetic storyline provided in the form of extended captions. A strikingly visual, thoroughly engaging, and quite original, “Relations That Suck” is enthusiastically recommended to fans of the vampire genre, as well as anyone with an interest in the not-so-simple art of visual storytelling.

Thanks for coming to the Website Launch Party

It was great to see everyone who came by. I hope you enjoyed the book and the posters and got to meet some of the people involved in the project (Angela DeCenzo, Norma Cordova, Stephani Martinez, Nikol Dedischew, and Marcus Wu were there).

After being at Sugar Lounge for 5 hours I had to leave at 11pm to get some food even though there were quite a few people still hanging out. Next time I will remember to bring some snacks.

It was a bit dark at Sugar Lounge, but we managed to get some photos of the event.

The First Review is Here

Eva is a vampire who likes to live among humans, abstaining from ever killing one. She lives in an old textile mill and enjoys making lace. One day, a human man who figures out her secret wants to know what it’s like to be bitten by a vampire. So Eva does, though she almost kills him. Eva then falls into a depression, refusing to come out. That’s when she meets Dries.

Dries is a spider who loathes spinning webs. Instead he is a traveling spider, sending a line of silk into the air to fly to new places. He and Eva become quick friends after he brings her food. They explore the city together, until they run into the man Eva almost killed. He begs Eva to turn him into a vampire, too. She doesn’t want to but Dries convinces her to do something that has dire consequences.

“Relations that Suck” by Marilyn Yu is a dark and strangely entrancing book. It’s not so much the story itself (it is only 50-pages long). It’s how the pictures tell the story. It’s just… wow. I am most definitely a fan of Marilyn Yu and her designs now, and I recommend “Relations that Suck” to vampire and fashion fans.

Hi Everyone,

The book that I’ve been working on for the past two years is almost here!

Now the first step in bringing it to the world is to launch this website (since nothing really exists these days if it is not on-line).

Please help me celebrate this milestone.

Save the Date: Thursday March 26th, 6pm

In addition to seeing me and the new book website, I will have an advanced copy of the book that you can peruse as well as posters available.

“Relations that Suck: The Story of Eva and Dries” is a fable about the friendship and destiny of two timeless characters from award-winning, San Francisco-based fashion designer, Marilyn Yu. Eva is a creative vampire who likes people. Dries is a traveling spider who disdains web-spinning. “Relations That Suck” is a piece of art in book form that bridges the worlds of fine art, fashion, and writing. It portrays the tragedies of denial and guilt through thirty-five dramatic photographs accompanied by a poetically heart-breaking narrative.
