La Femme Fatale Box Design Contest

Back(s)Marilyn Yu is seeking an original, creative graphic design for the box housing her up-coming book, La Femme Fatale.

La Femme Fatale & Marilyn Yu

Genre-busting artist Marilyn Yu’s up-coming book project is a gateway work that invites readers to have an intimate interaction with the beautiful and profound. La Femme Fatale is the epic story of Eva the vampire encapsulated in a deck of cards. Inspired from tarot and illuminated manuscripts, Yu is creating a tool for introspection and divination for our current era.

Yu values collaborative creation. She strives to direct our cultural evolution onto a more constructive trajectory by facilitating idea exchange, encouraging critical thinking, and inspiring collective envisioning of our future. As advances in technology break down traditional boundaries, Yu finds our inherited cultures unskilled at dealing with the collisions of different ideas and views because they have ceased to evolve. Instead of leading to greater understanding, easier access to information and people has led to defensiveness and an entrenchment of ideas. Yu hopes to develop constructive ways of interacting, so that we can proceed towards the future together and without fear.

Relations that Suck: The Story of Eva and Dries Book Review

January 3, 7:35 PMLexington Vampire ExaminerBertena Varney
Relations that Suck: The Story of Eva and Dries by Marilyn Yu is more than just a spellbinding, emotional story but also a visionary delicacy for your senses.
The story itself is one to which any reader can relate. The characters struggle with who they are, with the consequences of their actions and with their finding a relationship between each other that extends further than either would believe.

Eva is a vampire who struggles with who she is. She has adapted to feeding only as needed and as little as she needs to survive. Dries is a spider that cannot handle the mundane world of web spinning and searches for a new meaning to his life. They meet and both share a relationship that is life changing. The author weaves a story that makes you yearn to know more.

But the amazement of the story is not all that Ms. Yu has contributed to this book. She is also credited with the Art Director, Clothing Designer, and Artist. Each page of the book is a photograph of different models as they go through the struggle of the story.  The pictures are so inviting that you find yourself inside each page. The details of the symbols, the clothing and even the doilies are so exquisite that one can stare at each page and wonder what profound meaning each holds.

The author knows that her beautifully dressed vampire and large spider will want her readers to know more and she provides this on her website. Yu provides us with a free study guide on her website as well. This study guide tells the meaning of each character, picture and symbol located within the book.

Ms. Yu wrote that she may write a prequel telling of Eva’s life before she met Dries. I encourage her to do this and will be one of the first in line to buy the book. Ms. Yu is a talented artist in both visual and linguistic talents that has created a piece of art that tempts all of the readers’ senses. It is definitely a book to be collected and enjoyed.

OutsaPop Trashion Recycled DIY fashion – elokuu 2009

“Relations That Suck” is a art book about a creative vampire and a traveling spider that bridges the worlds of fine art, fashion and writing. I could not stop staring at the floor piece made from 20 something bridal white bleached doilies sewn together. Pretty. Would work beautifully in a dress or as an interior wall piece or curtains.
